Why Missing Factor matters

Most multiplication drills ask "7 × 8 = ?" - generate the product. Missing Factor flips that around: "7 × ? = 56" - find the other factor. It's the same set of facts, but asks for them in reverse. This is the exact thinking children need for division (56 ÷ 7 = ?), word problems ("how many groups of 7 fit in 56?"), and fractions.

A child who can answer 7 × 8 = 56 instantly may pause on 7 × ? = 56. Practicing this gap is what turns a rote-memorised table into real number sense.

Tips for parents

Same table as before

If your child just nailed Type the Answer for the 7 table, run Missing Factor on the 7 table next. Same facts, harder ask.

The bridge to division

"7 × ? = 56" is one mental step from "56 ÷ 7 = ?". If they can do this, they're ready for division.

Wrong is fine

The correct factor shows in red on a miss. Have your child say the full fact out loud: "Seven times eight is fifty-six".
